Unit Purpose
We know that language is an incredible gift that God has given to humanity. It is a way that enables us to communicate information among one another. With that in mind, this unit is focused on building skills in a way that honors the gift we have been given. After reviewing MAP test scores across the second grade, we were able to see that a unit focusing on paragraph was needed to continue the development of such language skills. In this unit, students will be able to learn and write in paragraph structure using topics that are of interest to them.

Context
The school in which this unit was taught is a private, Christian school. At this school, many students are taken out of the classroom multiple times a week to receive extra help or be given more of a challenge in certain subject areas. All of the second-grade students have been studying how to read informational texts. They have looked at text features and have now been placed in informational text groups. In these groups, students are reading through a leveled text and gathering information. Alongside of this, students are learning how to write their own informational paragraphs. Now that students have acquired skills for reading informational text and have experience with it, they will be learning how to create their own through this unit. This unit is a STEP (student targeted emphasis period) unit for a group of six students. In this group, I will be focusing on developing students’ language usage skills—in particular, the structure of informational paragraphs.
