From the Pre-assessment, I found that all of my students know how to identify the topic sentence of a paragraph, so I know that we don’t need to spend as much time working on that skill. However, I am curious about whether or not they can tell what a topic sentence does alongside of being able to identify it. I also found out that around half of my students knew how to identify the conclusion sentence and most of my students struggle with determining which is the example sentence and which is the detail sentence in an informational paragraph. I expected this to be a problem that would arise. I know that we will need to spend some time discussing what makes up these two kinds of sentences and how we can identify them.
