From looking at students' writing and post assessment, I was able to conclude that my students have all progressed from the beginning stage into either the developing or secure stage. The rubric assessment analyzed students' work against the learning targets for this unit and to what level they were achieved in the final writing assignment. The learning targets were determined at the beginning based on Common Core Standards and shaped the entire unit. Each lesson was created with the aim of reaching these goals.
The final assignment that students were given included outlining and writing an informational paragraph based on information gathered through research. By scaffolding writing throughout the unit, I set students up to be familiar with and competent in the format of writing that was expected of them. First, I modeled an informational paragraph. Then, we wrote one all together. At a later date, students worked in groups to create their own informational paragraphs based on things they already knew. Finally, students researched a topic of their choosing and wrote their own informational paragraphs. This scaffolding allowed for students to slowly be given more and more independence as they gained experience with informational paragraph writing. |
